In the last few years, Wilson and Diamond started the trend of using alternative metals to steel in order to build a lighter mask that still maintained a high level of strength. While these 2 companies were getting all the attention, Champro came in late this past spring with an even lighter mask, 15.5 ounces using a magnesium alloy - of all things - passing up both its Wilson and Diamond competitors in the lightest umpire mask on the market category.
We placed a limited quantity on order in the late summer, and they just arrived today.
REVIEWS AND THOUGHTS
Since our order, the mask was named the best traditional umpire mask 2009 by Midwest Umpire Blog.
My feeling is the Wilson MLB Titanium Umpire Mask in a Standard Profile is the best mask on the market, especially because of its wrap around pad system.
And the Diamond Featherweight black or silver frame umpire masks are the best value in a lightweight frame around 1 pound.
The mask discussed here from Champro is going to serve some middle ground between the two, lighter than both but with thicker padding is more protective than those offered by Diamond.
MORE FROM CHAMPRO
In addition, we'll be offering Champro's Optic Yellow 4 Dial Indicator with Balls first as well as a starter kit that will include a standard mask, Pro-Plus chest protector and shin guards. The latter of which should be available by mid-January.Note: We'll have more images for the magnesium beyond the one supplied by Champro within the next several weeks.
